Halloween Writing FREEBIE!

Updated: Oct 16, 2022

This month lots of teachers out there are celebrating Halloween in your classrooms. And, even if you aren't actually having a monster mash style bash with your students, you can bet they all already have Halloween on the brain. And, if Halloween happens to fall on a school day...Yikes! You know those once sweet little munchkins are going to be wound up like they have all been eating nothing but candy for breakfast!

So, if your students are anything like mine, planning for the days leading up to AND the day(s) after Halloween is monstrously (See what I did there? LOL!) important for your surviving the month without turning into a real-life zombie.

The good news is that you can harness the power of Halloween and use it to inspire your students to write. Whether you are having your students write ghost stories, research the origins of Halloween, or argue whether or not students should be allowed to eat candy at school (definitely not!), you have all the excitement you need to get your students' creative juices flowing while mixing a little of what they want to talk about (Halloween) with what you want them to learn about or practice (writing).

Use their excitement for good rather than...well....you know!

So, to get the kiddos excited to for writing, I created these Halloween writing prompts, organizer, writing pages, and vocabulary cards to give my students a chance to celebrate Halloween throughout the month.

In this FREE pack I have included a writing tasks for all three writing text types so that you could use whichever prompt went with the writing text type you are currently working on with your students. I made the tasks easily adaptable to whatever grade-level you have. (My kids are mostly writing multi-paragraph essays, but the prompts say paragraph or essay so you can choose what student outcomes best suit your class as a whole or individual students).

Happy Halloween!
